Bracing

The Push Ortho CMC is the original brace for thumb-base (CMC) arthritis, and the one hand therapists prescribe most. It stabilises the basal joint of the thumb and holds it in a functional position, so pain and loss of grip strength ease while the wrist and fingers stay completely free. You can type, cook, drive and garden in it.

How it works

A cylindrical section wraps the ball of the thumb; inside it, a shapeable aluminium strip lets the therapist (or you) fine-tune the support. A fixed strip runs along the palm to the outside of the hand and closes at the back with two non-elastic bands. It covers very little of the palm, so it can be worn under a glove.

Who it's for

Osteoarthritis at the base of the thumb; CMC joint instability; anyone whose pain is at the base of the thumb rather than the wrist. If the pain runs along the thumb side of the wrist, a thumb spica may be the better choice — see our guide.

Sizing

Measure the circumference of the palm at the knuckles (excluding the thumb). Choose left or right.

Isotoner compression gloves for swelling on days the brace is off, and the Oval-8 for arthritic finger joints.

The Oval-8 is the finger splint that doesn't need tape. A seamless band of moulded plastic slips over the joint and holds it in position — for trigger finger, mallet finger, swan-neck and boutonnière deformities, hypermobility, arthritis and fracture protection. Worn seven different ways depending on the condition, it is so light most people forget it's there.

• Stays in place without straps or tape; you can wash your hands, swim and work in water without removing it.
• Open design keeps the skin dry; broad, flat bands spread pressure so it can be worn full time.
• Slips on and off in seconds when it's only needed for certain tasks.

Getting the size right

Fit is everything with an Oval-8, and a healthcare provider will get the best result. To size at home: with a flexible tape, measure the circumference around the joint you're treating and match it to the table below. If the measurement falls between sizes, order both adjacent sizes — a snug fit in the morning can be loose by evening, and many wearers keep two.

A padded resting splint that keeps a trigger finger straight so the tendon can settle. A lightweight aluminium stay inside a breathable neoprene wrap stops the joint bending and catching; strong hook-and-loop fasteners hold it without slipping. One size fits any finger on either hand, up to about 7.5 cm around.

Trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis), and any stiff or painful finger that needs resting, especially overnight. Sold singly.

A firm, low-cost wrist brace with an aluminium stay, for holding the wrist still after surgery or injury. The Secur Basic replaced our SecurFlex brace: same hook-and-loop straps with buckles, same aluminium splint, with a finished edge that lasts longer. Soft, breathable fabric; fingers stay free to bend at the knuckles.

Who it's for

Post-operative wrist immobilisation, wrist sprains and carpal tunnel night splinting. Clinics keep a run of sizes on the shelf at this price.

Putting it on

Lay the brace open, place the hand palm-down against the metal stay with the thumb through the cut-out, bring the edges together and fasten the straps from the wrist up. Adjust for comfort; you should still be able to bend your fingers.

TRIGGER FINGER SPLINTS PRO - PALM BASED 

Universal Sized , multiple application Trigger Finger Splint

One size fits most fingers including the index, middle, ring, pinky finger, or trigger thumb left and right hands.

The splint has multiple applications to assist in managing a range of individual finger ailments.

Secur hook and loop straps are provided to fasten around hand or trigger thumb if required. Assists in immobilizing the different finger knuckles with this splint- including IP, MCP, PIP and DIP joint.

Secur Durable double-sided loop is the strapping material for splints: soft loop on both faces, no stretch, and it bonds to any hook fastener, including Velcro® brand. Cut a length, press hook onto either side, and you have a padded, non-stretch strap that holds a thermoplastic splint firmly without pressure points. The edges self-seal when cut, so straps don't fray, and it doesn't de-laminate the way cheaper double-sided loops do.

Please note: this is loop on both sides. It is not hook-and-loop. You attach hook (self-adhesive or sew-on) wherever you need a closure.

Hand therapists and orthotists strapping thermoplastic splints; anyone making custom braces, positioning aids or restraint-free supports where even compression and patient comfort matter.

SKU reference

A spring-loaded finger splint that gently pulls a stiff PIP joint back towards straight. The LMB L501 applies about 227 g (8 oz) of extension force when the joint is at 15 degrees of flexion, spread evenly by a contoured centre pad. It is indicated where the PIP joint is short of full extension by 45 degrees or less.

Who it's for

Hand therapists treating PIP joint tightness after fracture, tendon repair, Dupuytren's release or a boutonnière injury. The two side wires bend, so the force can be adjusted and the splint eased as swelling changes.

Getting the size right

With the finger straight, measure from the distal palmar crease to the crease at the fingertip joint, then match the length below.

Goes well with

Sof-Stretch extension splint for a padded alternative, and the Oval-8 once the joint needs holding rather than stretching.

A soft, padded extension splint for a stiff PIP joint, with plastic-coated wires you can bend to the finger. The Rolyan Sof-Stretch pushes the middle joint towards straight while leaving the knuckle almost free, and the angled distal pad keeps full contact so pressure is spread rather than concentrated. Bend the wires to suit finger size or a change in swelling.

Who it's for

PIP joint tightness, flexion contractures and boutonnière deformity, in the hands of a hand therapist. Patients find it the most comfortable of the extension splints, which helps with wearing time. The "P" on the proximal pad reminds them which end goes towards the palm.

Getting the size right

With the finger straight, measure the matching finger on the unaffected hand from the distal palmar crease to the crease at the fingertip joint.

A Capener-style spring coil splint that straightens a tight PIP joint while still letting the finger bend. Coil springs on both sides of the joint give balanced dynamic extension of about 227 g (8 oz) at 15 degrees of flexion, so the splint doesn't twist as the finger straightens. Curved pads spread the pressure; the low profile fits under a glove or sleeve.

Who it's for

Hand therapists treating PIP flexion contractures and boutonnière deformity where the contracture is up to 45 degrees and feels elastic when stretched. Gives some MP support as well. Latex-free.

Measure from the distal palmar crease to the DIP joint with the finger extended.

• Lay wrist brace open on a flat surface.
